He finished six lengths behind COUNTRY MILE that day, but the context is important. Country Mile was rated 137 and THE GRAY GHOST just 120, yet they met at level weights. He pressed the favourite after four out and remained second when the winner pulled clear late.
Even more notably, 137-rated O’MOORE PARK finished another nine lengths behind THE GRAY GHOST despite carrying 5lb less. For a chasing debut, that was a seriously encouraging performance.
Tomorrow’s step up from 2m to 2m3f should suit too. He has plenty of proven stamina, winning over 2m4f at Newcastle and finishing fourth over 2m5½f here at Ascot last December, beaten only 3¾ lengths in a Class 3.
He also won a Class 3 handicap hurdle at Newcastle in February from 117, staying on strongly to lead late. He is now only 3lb higher over fences despite that excellent chase debut.
Ascot therefore holds no fears, good ground suits and the extra three furlongs should allow Charlie Price to ride him with a little more patience than at Uttoxeter.
JET TO VEGAS is the obvious danger after winning at Market Rasen, but he has gone up to 135 and carries 11st9lb before his rider’s 7lb claim. GLYNN BRAE carries 11st10lb and makes his chase debut, while DANCE AND GLANCE also tackles fences for the first time after 175 days away.
THE GRAY GHOST already has that valuable chasing experience and gets 16lb from Glynn Brae and 7lb from Dance And Glance on the racecard weights.
At around 4/1, I think that Uttoxeter performance is the key. He competed with a horse rated 17lb higher at level weights and left another highly rated rival well behind.
