Loughnane Makes Weight to Land Juvenile Turf Sprint

Libertango, trained by George Boughey, won the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland on Friday 30 October 2026 under Billy Loughnane, who had only been confirmed as her jockey shortly before the race. The No Nay Never filly was the 9-5 favourite and crossed the line a length and a quarter clear.

It was the opening Grade 1 on a card given over to two-year-olds, scheduled for 6.55pm UK time. The result gave British-trained runners a first major success on Future Stars Friday, with Aidan O'Brien's Juvenile Fillies Turf runner Sun Goddess still to come that evening.

How the late jockey switch unfolded

Libertango's regular rider Loughnane had initially been left off the booking. Flavien Prat was due to ride because the filly's weight of 8st 7lb presented a challenge for Loughnane.

The booking changed on raceday, with Loughnane replacing Prat after the weight concern was resolved. Confirmation came shortly before the Grade 1.

Loughnane, 20, had been crowned British champion jockey earlier in the month, becoming the youngest holder of the title in more than a century.

The race itself

The race was run over five and a half furlongs on turf. Libertango had raced exclusively at six furlongs until Friday and was drawn in stall three.

Loughnane kept Libertango in midfield before producing a three-wide run into the straight. She overcame trouble about three furlongs out and delivered a strong late rally, asserting inside the final furlong to win by 1¼ lengths.

Mussab, Final Objective, Primetime Emmy, Force Noir, Moonrise, Ruiva, Velozee, Brickyard Belle and Crownbreaker finished behind the winner. Brickyard Belle, unbeaten before the race and a leading home-trained hope, was among the beaten horses.

Stewards' decision and what it did to the placings

A stewards' inquiry altered the placings behind the winner. Harper's Corner crossed the line third, but a foul claim by David Egan, riding the unplaced Force Noir, was upheld and Harper's Corner was placed down the field. Libertango's victory was unaffected.

Anyone checking results or settlement should use the final official order rather than the first-past-the-post positions. A full official placing list is not reproduced here.

What the win means for Libertango and her connections

This was Libertango's first top-level win, taking her record to four wins and two seconds from six starts. Her previous run had produced a second to Sun Goddess in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket. Aidan O'Brien's Sun Goddess was due to contest the Juvenile Fillies Turf later on the same card.

The win was a first Breeders' Cup success for Loughnane and Boughey, and a second for sire No Nay Never. Boughey has built a high profile in a short time, and the Grade 1 adds an international success to his season. Ibrahim Araci's racing manager Rob Speers travelled with the filly as the owner's representative.

Her wider significance is a reminder of how fine the margins can be in international travelling. The decision to book Prat was a rational response to a known weight issue, and it was reversed only when Loughnane's weight allowed. The change did not hurt her chance. Her stable jockey knew her well and she had a favourable draw.

What happens next

Libertango's next target has not been confirmed. Connections have not announced a winter or 2027 plan, so any talk of juvenile championship honours or a switch back to six furlongs should be treated as speculation until Boughey or the owners say more.

Friday's card continues with the Juvenile Fillies, the Juvenile Fillies Turf, the Juvenile and the Juvenile Turf, with Saturday 31 October to follow at Keeneland. The disqualification of Harper's Corner is the main point to note on the Juvenile Turf Sprint result, and the official chart should be treated as the final word on placings.
