Trainer Olly Murphy and jockey Sean Bowen dominated the opening three races at Uttoxeter on Friday 30 October, landing a quickfire hat-trick for favourite backers. The sequence began at 12.35pm with Hold The Serve in the beginners' chase before extending through the novice hurdle and mares' maiden hurdle.
Chase experience proves decisive
Hold The Serve's chasing experience proved crucial in the opener, the six-year-old beating Count Of Vendome by four and a half lengths having followed leading Arkle contender Kabral Du Mathan home at Perth on his chasing debut this month. The grey started at 4-6 favourite for the Kalahari King beginners' chase.
Novice hurdle and maiden hurdle follow
Bowen and Murphy won the two-mile-four-furlong novice hurdle by a similar margin with Taranis Dubh, who built on a maiden hurdle win at Worcester this month. The hat-trick was completed when Merry Wood won the two-mile mares' maiden hurdle. Murphy had highlighted Merry Wood as one of his better novice hurdlers in his stable tour, suggesting she could develop into a Listed-class performer.
